MAY 9, 12, 2019. \u201cBirdhop\u201d started quite a while ago, as the \u201cculture\u201d (and especially music) companion of a much <a href=\"http:\/\/www.counterweights.ca\/\">more political website<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It had some time online as \u201cBIRDHOP \u2014 Rediscovering Modern Jazz, 1940\u20131970.\u201d But then in a more general technological update, it was cast adrift as the political preoccupations of the companion site seemed to grow more urgent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, when the urge to escape from what increasingly seem like potential new political dark times ahead (maybe) finds itself combining with our increasing age, we (or should it just be I?) aspire to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EpWbtMzlxI8\">some fresh, new cut<\/a> at Birdhop. (Possibly with half a political edge, but gently, lightly? Too much of politics today is just too mean-spirited.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/prabook.com\/web\/charlie.parker\/3722522#gallery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"270\" height=\"358\" src=\"http:\/\/birdhop.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/TBIRD05.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11\" srcset=\"http:\/\/birdhop.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/TBIRD05.jpg 270w, http:\/\/birdhop.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/TBIRD05-226x300.jpg 226w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em>Charlie Parker, recording star<\/em>!<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This view of democracy in North America 2019 aspires to somehow fit at least part of the very broad view bequeathed by the late <a href=\"https:\/\/jerryjazzmusician.com\/2018\/02\/black-history-month-profile-charlie-parker\/\">great Charlie Parker<\/a>, whose nickname was \u201cBird\u201d \u2014 and to whom Birdhop is meant as some kind of tribute, in the age of hip hop and all that \u2026 and far beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The end of it all may be yet another imperfect set of notes on the Charles Parker Jr who was born in Kansas City in 1920 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.6sqft.com\/historic-charlie-parker-townhouse-in-alphabet-city-hits-the-market-for-9m\/\">died in New York<\/a> in 1955. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And this raises the question : why is Charlie Parker so interesting in 2019, even if you are not deeply into either the alto saxophone or the story of modern jazz?<\/p>\n\n\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/prabook.com\/web\/charlie.parker\/3722522#gallery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"378\" height=\"383\" src=\"http:\/\/birdhop.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/TBIRD04.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24\" srcset=\"http:\/\/birdhop.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/TBIRD04.jpg 378w, http:\/\/birdhop.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/TBIRD04-296x300.jpg 296w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 378px) 100vw, 378px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>\u201c<em>Charlie Parker Quintet at The Royal Roost, 1580 Broadway, New York City, 18 December 1948<\/em>.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The shortest answer, I think, is just that Charlie Parker (1920\u20131955) is at least one of the great antidotes modern American culture has, to the at once destructive and retrogressive fake political philosophy of Donald Trump \u2014 who apparently to his own as much as many others\u2019 astonishment is now serving as President of the USA today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.udiscovermusic.com\/stories\/bird-with-strings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"378\" height=\"333\" src=\"http:\/\/birdhop.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/TBIRD03.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26\" srcset=\"http:\/\/birdhop.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/TBIRD03.jpg 378w, http:\/\/birdhop.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/TBIRD03-300x264.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 378px) 100vw, 378px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em>Charlie Parker with Strings \u2014 1949 recordings once thought not really hip, but more recently appreciated by fresh ears.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>(In a Canadian province that elected a somewhat Trumpian government with just over 40% of the popular vote last June we also know first hand that the more general problem is not confined to US geography. And see : \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_ca\/article\/neavbm\/canada-is-going-conservative-jason-kenney\">Canada Is Going Conservative<\/a>.\u201d Justin Trudeau\u2019s Liberals may just manage a minority government in this year\u2019s October 21 Canadian federal election, or worse.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flashbak.com\/john-coltranes-notes-for-a-love-supreme-and-miles-davis-god-given-gift-363960\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"306\" height=\"374\" src=\"http:\/\/birdhop.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/TBIRD06.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28\" srcset=\"http:\/\/birdhop.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/TBIRD06.jpg 306w, http:\/\/birdhop.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/TBIRD06-245x300.jpg 245w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 306px) 100vw, 306px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em>Charlie Parker (l) and his shrewder, more professional colleague in the legendary invention of modern jazz, Dizzy Gillespie (r) at Birdland in New York City, 1950.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>One sign of Charlie Parker\u2019s unique cultural power (still largely unappreciated in most versions of mainstream media America?) is that the iconic hard-edged conservative Clint Eastwood (\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/annemariayritys\/status\/1127606925913350144\">I tried being reasonable, but I didn&#8217;t like it<\/a>\u201d) felt driven to make a Hollywood biography of Parker in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0094747\/\">the 1988 movie, \u201cBird.\u201d<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eastwood himself has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-election-clinteastwood-idUSKCN10F21C\">critic of Obama and a supporter of Trump<\/a>. And the view of Charlie Parker offered in \u201cBird\u201d, while respectful in some ways, is too negatively focused on the struggling side of a musical genius addicted to heroin since the age of 15. The horn line at the right-hand side of the photo includes (left to right) Dexter Gordon on tenor sax, Buck Clayton on trumpet, and Charlie Parker on alto.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet if Clint Eastwood was uncomfortable with Barack Obama as an American president, &#8220;Bird&#8221; at least shows how one iconic conservative supporter of the present-day  US Republican party does understand that the unique and inevitably tormented but also buoyant African American experience has made an authentic and unmistakable contribution to American democratic culture in its broadest sense. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.udiscovermusic.com\/news\/life-with-bird-by-charlie-parkers-stepdaughter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"213\" src=\"http:\/\/birdhop.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/TBIRD07.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-36\"\/><\/a><figcaption><em>At home at 151 Avenue B in Manhattan in Charlie Parker\u2019s later life. \u201cIt was really wonderful to walk with Bird,\u201d his stepdaughter Kim (right) has reported. \u201cHe was really dignified.\u201d<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Clint Eastwood would no doubt not see the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HmroWIcCNUI\">Yardbird Suite<\/a>&#8221; brilliant short life of Charlie Parker from 1920 to 1955 as one ultimate antidote to and even salvation from the hopefully even much, much shorter presidency of Donald Trump, and all its deeper complexities. That  understanding may have been pioneered by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jack_Kerouac\">Jack Kerouac (from a French Canadian family  in Lowell, Massachusetts )<\/a>  in his 1957 novel, <em>On the Road<\/em>.
